The Child and Adolescent Psychiatry department at the KU Leuven is a large University Hospital based psychiatric service, providing toplevel clinical care and part of the Neuroscience Department of the University of Leuven. The Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Department consists of 70 inpatient places, a liaison child psychiatry service, 8 forensic places, 7 daycare places, some outreach facilities, an Expert Center for Autism and a large outpatient clinic. In the field of psychosis, autism and ADHD mixed teams of adolescent and adult psychiatrist offer continuous care. The child and adolescent department has participated in several international multisite clinical trials on a continuous basis since 2000, with prof. Danckaerts as principal Investigator. The centre is a partner in 2 recently funded FP7-projects (PERS and ADDUCE), where one of the main tasks has been to lead the training and dissemination work package.
KU Leuven is a research-intensive university in the European Research Area that strives to carry out high-quality research and thus to take its place among the best universities in Europe. In 2011, 8.4% of KU Leuven’s research expenses originated from international public funds, around 85% of this coming from the European Union’s Framework Programme for Research and Innovation (FP). As of April 2012, KU Leuven is conducting 393 projects under FP7 (2007-2013), including 35 prestigious European Research Council grants (ERC). KU Leuven currently ranks 5th in total FP7 funds awarded, after Cambridge, Oxford, Imperial College and ETH Zürich.
The KU Leuven will be involved in WP8 (Training programme for improving transitional care across the EU). KU Leuven will also contribute to WPs 1, 3, 4, 6 and 7.
KU Leuven’s main tasks in the project within WP8 will be to
- develop training procedures and to ensure that investigators receive appropriate training for the conduct of the MILESTONE project; this includes training for all staff involved in the clinical studies and the provision of study training packages with instructions for all key assessments involved;
- monitor and ensure quality of research across studies and between investigators and research sites and
- facilitate dissemination of progress and results of studies.
