Young Project Advisors

Amanda Tuffrey

Young Project Advisor, UK

Amanda, YPA has worked on the MILESTONE project since the beginning and has campaigned for better mental health provisions since the age of 16 through various charities and organisations. Now mentoring new project advisors, she is still very much dedicated to tackling stigma and improving services for young people. She has worked on CYP IAPT, NICE guidance into transitions and eating disorders and has submitted evidence for the health select committee and Norman Lamb's mental health task force.

Why I got involved in the project:
I wanted to get involved in the MILESTONE project because I have had a lot of experience with mental health services myself, and would like to be able to help improve these services. From my own experience, I know that there are elements in our own mental health services that could be improved, and I’d love to be involved in that kind of change.

What I hope to get out of my experience:
I want to help make some positive change for people who are in mental health services, especially those who are in some kind of transition between services.

Why I got involved in the project:
I've been largely concerned with mental health issues for many years now and have recently come to realise the drastic need of change in mental health services, not only in Ireland, but in Europe.

What I hope to get out of my experience:
I am delighted to have the opportunity to be involved with this project and hope to be able to help make a change or progress, no matter how big or small. I’m excited to share ideas I have and also to learn so much about the process of mental health transition and how changes can be made.

Young Project Advisor, IRL

Why I got involved in the project:
I got involved with MILESTONE as I feel strongly that mental health services need to view the services provided holistically, and not as youth mental health services versus adult mental health services. A person does not stop needing the same support they received in CAMHS or other services as soon as they turn 18.

What I hope to get out of my experience:
I hope to learn more about the current mental health service model and how a project such as this can be implemented.

Sarah Buttle

Young Project Advisor, IRL

Why I got involved in the project:
I am passionate about promoting awareness surrounding education for young people about mental health, and in return creating prevention methods through suitable supports and resources, with an emphasis on education and understanding of mental health illnesses.

What I hope to get out of my experience:
I can honestly say that by immersing myself and educating myself about how the brain works, emotional regulating and taking classes in mindfulness and stress management, I have gotten to where I am today with regard to understanding my mental health and also understanding what is lacking in terms of services available to those seeking help. I’m really
excited to be involved in this study as I feel so passionately about this area and more specifically the transition between
services for young people.
